Hello, my name is Hal Mayes. I’m an owner/partner at a small property management company in upstate NY. I’m 28, I have a beautiful wife and daughter, and I’ve been interested in politics my whole life. I believe in the principals that constitute conservatism and think they are often misunderstood (which is part of the reason I author this website). I also love my fantastic local church, Terra Nova.
This site is built on the latest version of wordpress and is hosted by the beautiful people over at (mt) Media Temple, (that’s an affiliate link) who are more than happy to answer the phone at 2 AM on a weekend and walk me through whatever it is I’ve done to screw up my grid service this time.
The theme for this site is hand-coded with care by yours truly, and is inspired by two of the best tech blogs on the planet, Shawnblanc.net by Shawn Blanc, and Daring Fireball by John Gruber. All coding is done in Coda 2. Typefaces are delivered via the totally-awesome typekit service.
For the design & math nerds out there: This theme is heavily influenced by the golden section. Many of the dimensions, type sizes, negative spaces, etc were based off of this modular scale, which itself is based off of the golden section and some other important numbers. If this site looks a little odd, chances are you’re using a browser that doesn’t comply with web standards—such as Internet Explorer—save yourself a lot of pain and get a real web browser.
Writing for this site is done on my trusty iPhone 6S Plus and MacBook Air (2013), and occasionally on my wife’s iPad. I use the awesome publishing app MarsEdit.
You might be wondering what the name basecharge means. Well, I’m not a religious person, but I do consider myself a Christ-follower. The name basecharge is a subtle reference to the principal task given to by Christ to His followers in Matthew 28:19. It’s basecharge as in basic charge, get it?
